Not sure if you got the the gratitude vids I did last week which referenced the original with a bit of nuance. I snuck an SEO lesson in there and one of them that I put at the end was what Michael Jackson the King of Pop taught me about SEO.
But first on the gratitude thing. Feeling gratitude can change your life. It reframes everything. It pre-supposes abundance. If you are a doubting Thomas on its power, then just feel how you would feel if you were totally grateful. Anchor it and fire it off at will. (I explain anchoring in the gratitude video and link to my podcast interview with Tom and Kim)
OK the original MJ. He helped inform my rule to focus on big drivers, the leverage that will move the giant ship. The chord that will make the song, or kill the song.
Like a chord in b minor 😉 I am guessing b minor is a thing, I do not know much about music.
But I do know that although you eat an elephant one bite at a time. The bigger the bites, the faster the meal. If that is your outcome.
Like novelty, which is a word I stole from therapist Esther Perrel, author of Mating in Captivity.
And novelty is really the first letter of the acronym in AIDA. Awareness, and perhaps interest and well desire to take action .
Psychological Priming
Priming. There is a psychological concept called prime. I did a whole podcast and article on the subject.
Have you heard the phrase prime the pump?
It is sort of a subliminal advertising concept You know that word right?
In fact, subliminal is what got me interested in psychology and buying behavior. I was on a recruiting trip at Santa Clara U, and was introduced to a rival high school opponent from St. John Bosco HS. Terry O’Hara was a freshman and remembered me and I sure remembered him.
I was in his dorm and he had a book on his shelf at the entry. It was called “Clam Plate Orgy”. I asked why does he have this orgy thing at a rather Catholic University lol
He explained the concept of subliminals and a new path was started for yours truly.
BTW when I mention a book I will link it with my affiliate links. But also you can youtube it usually and find talks by the author or reviews. If you find topics interesting and wish to master them then for sure deep dive like a master would.
So priming is like next level. Two demonstrations of priming can be seen in the movie with Will Smith and Margot Robbie called Focus. Two conmen who use priming to influence their gambling bets. Or for the somewhat more cerebral the Darren Brown docs on youtube.
But remember as one of my mentors Jonathan Altfeld reminded me once, “its television”. In other words Darren sorts for the right subjects to feature in his shows. But priming to a whole town to be lucky is pretty amazing. The book Pre-Suasion by Robert Ciadini is in many ways about priming.
In one chapter Cialdini described the ‘Valentine Study’ where a young woman approaches two random samples of middle-aged men on a busy street walking alone. Pointing to a group of males, she claims they’ve stolen her cell phone and she asks them to get it back for her.
In the first sample just 20% approached the group, whereas in the second 37% did. Minutes before, all subjects had been approached by another young woman asking directions; the first sample was asked for ‘Martin Street’ and the second for ‘Valentine Street’. Where a request wasn’t enough, just one word, a pre-suasive opener ‘Valentine’ changed the response by putting them in mind of romance.
So what does that have to do with SEO and websites?
Cialdini showed how focusing away from cost by placing a sofa on a background of fluffy clouds, which increased the importance of comfort and an increase in purchase cost perception. When the same item was placed against a background of small coins, respondents rated cost and price as more important and had a lower perceived cost or value of the sofa.
But how do we do it stealthy-like. Like Will Smith in the movie, to win a bet?

Social Proof is another Cialdini word. If you are not seeped in this stuff then think of a testimonial or review. Now think of a testimonial subliminally inserted. If you respect any of the guys mentioned so far and you got this far, then you have allowed me to steal their authority. To rub it onto yours truly.
Remember above where I explained that the power of gratitude is that it implies, or pre-supposes abundance?
These things can pre-suppose your worth and value in the marketplace. A high SERP or search engine result does that for you.
So does ubiquity. Which is you everywhere.
Thus, by being in Google top page, top listing, with tons of your space taking up Google via schema on your webpage. Well you are psychologically implying that you are endorsed by Google. Now I click one of several choices that you are displayed on Google. So many choices in fact.
Like your Ad at the top, or your GMB (I know they changed the name but Im an old dog), or your organic placement of your website, or maybe your Yelp listing, or oh! look! the video is there and so are some photos.
And that blog post has a snippet of three questions that I can read right on Google. Does so much you all over Google pre-suppose authority and endorsement by the biggest company in the world?
This induces something I call “click fatigue”. If you are researching something you only have so long usually to get to it. I will tell that story in a minute as I talk about the tragedy this week. But you want all the clicks to be you.
So the slippery slope that ends with more yous will win.
Most long timer online people too think of SEO as a conjob on Google. And it probably was. And in some ways still is a manipulation of G. We need to remember that they are a business too, and as syrupy this sounds. They want the best user experience.
Its about the traffic for you and me. True, but I am an optimizer. I do not like doing something just once. I want multiple returns on one effort. Ripple effects. Or put in another way a phrase I stole from Jay Abraham, exponential.
Thus the concept I call 4d or 5d. Now peeps are calling it in some ways web 3 or meta. Which means beyond. In semantic terms we can say the meaning of the meaning.
“Wherever I search there you are” is beyond static. It is beyond SEO 1.0. It is SEO 3.0.
The world of marketing has launched into the exponential. Do you know that you can buy a URL right now and mint it into the blockchain metasphere? So the value is beyond that original transaction. It is now also valued on a market called or at least built on blockchain. We will talk about that at the end.
Free Transcription
OK so I promised free transcription. You can get auto transcription from auphonic which is a post production service for audios. You can get your mp3 kicked out as a video, you can also get some of the words out of it.
Otter.ai is another one with limits per month but will let you take an mp3 and video, as I have seen some friends transcribe their zooms. And the all time lazy way is to take your video or converted mp3 to video on YouTube and get the free transcription. It is usually in the lower right on the ellipses.
Three Ways to use transcription
- So you can use transcription to talk and then create text for your blog and or social media posts.
- You can use it for easier consumption. Like I said above want to be a master? Take those people I mention and read the transcripts. I often will take the words put them into a notepad doc if I want to speed read through.
- The third benefit is to go to topics that you wish to curate or to get inspired by and grab their text and convert it into meaningful original-from you material for your blogs and articles. Or curate it and give the original credit attribution.

I think I forgot to mention AI in the video. So here is my take.
We too often call things smart. Smart cars, smart TVs, smart phones, and smart content creators.
If you want a meaningless piece of garbage use artificial intelligence to write or do your thinking for you.
The stuff I see is not much more useful than a content spinner that essentially shifts synonyms in for each iteration of the content.
Its OK, but you still have to edit and rewrite and why not just write it in the first place? We tend to latch onto automation and forget what we are going after. They are good for ideas though.
What first got me turned off was I tested Article Forge and it gave it some keywords and it wrote an ok boring article. But I put in “Kate Beckinsale” as a keyword and it gave many false facts.
I still keep a subscription to the app content ai, but just be careful.
Reunion
So I had a zoom with a high school alumni pal. Al Smith class of 82 at the St Bernard HS, and ten year vet with the Houston Oilers, Two time pro bowler, and a testament that the iron makes champions! Get into that weight room kids lol
I reached out to him because I caught an amazing interview that he did and I gotta have that on my show. We are meeting again this week for an interview. Why am I so juiced to get him on “tape”?
He is one of the few that gets his success. He was able to tell why he was so good. I also found out that he knows Hue Jackson who was one of our QBs at Pacific and a pro coach. Pretty cool and as I say, football is a smaller fraternity than one might think.
Anyway these concepts are universal, dare I say ubiquitous to you and me in the business world. My hypnosis friends would call that learning: generalizing across contexts. When I interview non-business people it is for the concepts that can apply to the wider audience and all contexts. But we actually met over potential business we will do together.
And to put it into business terms, very few of you watching manage the business that is the size of a professional coach. Who manage millions in revenue and costs using many familiar business school concepts.
So the Tragedy
I started my day Thursday with my wife showing me that our almost 17 year old cat wet himself. That has never happened before. She attended to him and the day went South from there.
I soon hear sobs from my son and wife as they had placed our guy onto the patio for some air.
So I rush out of my office to see my kitty, blackie struggling to walk three steps without wobbling and falling over. To encapsulate a long, intense day.
I then canceled everything and began searching and calling every emergency pet place widening the circle on Google maps with each search.
Nobody would see us asap. The so called emergency vets could only promise an ambiguous 6-8 hour wait in the parking lot because of safety protocols. Several hours later and I got nowhere as my circle of search was expanding across LA. My wife and son kept him cozy and calm through the day.
Our conundrum is that maybe we could wait those hours in a parking lot. But the car would cause nothing but anxiety in Blackie which is obviously not good. And there was the off chance that if they thought he was really bad on the check in from the lot, then they would stabilize him inside as we waited outside.
But then he would be alone for 6-8 hours without us. In a cage I imagined.
The clock kept turning and I did get an appointment from a place over in San Pedro for Friday morning. When asked “why not right away”, since they say on their website that they are emergency vet and take walk ins. Her reply was “we are at capacity.”
I would later find out that there is a Vet Crisis. Yah its a thing. A Doctor shortage. And parking lots slow down the service too.
Blackie would pass on later that evening.
Now as a football coach and professional persuader I know that moments give us opportunities. A good coach looks for frames.
In real estate good agents frame the experience. They stage a property for a sale.
I have counseled clients on their onboarding or consulting of clients. To stage the in house experience. To anchor or associate the pain feelings that the prospects want to avoid and to associate the positive feelings that they would like.
In the cosmetic field it is often to recapture those feelings of youth. To get that two piece bikini body back as opposed to the one piece with a wrap.
Isn’t that what Cialdini talks about earlier with the couch in coins or in puffy clouds, framing the experience with a towards and an away?
Being all over the net frames your searcher with you and your company as the go to for scratching their itch. To bandage their wound.
So being the consummate framer. I reminded my family that our guys mission was accomplished. My daughter and boy picked him out many years ago. And Blackie raised them up.
My daughter is about to empty the nest, my son I am guessing is not too far off. I said to them that Blackie waited for my, or shall I say his girl to get home from work before his exit. The picture I was attempting to paint was the right of passage. Our kids are at the tail end nearing the flight from the nest, the emancipation.
And blackies passage should serve as a signal that it is time we all learn that we are going to have to adjust to a new life.
That cat was our family focal point, our magnet of attention. He was always involved with us. Greeting me usually pre-dawn, sitting on our laps on movie night, and hanging out in the backyard with the neighbor cats.
During the time period when Julie and I and the kids were in bed from the WuFlu, he would come into the room, plop on the bed then make noise and walk across our achy heads. So he was banished to my office at nighttime. He made it his own lol.
And he went way past his expiration date. He served us with honor.
Nevertheless, local vets need some serious SEO help.
Blockchain.
I have gone back and forth on this but Zuck is changing his business for a reason. Facebook is part of Meta.
Dorsey of Twitter fame has rebranded Square into Block.
It was Chris Tomasulo that spent much of his interview with me about Bitcoin. Framings its viability by discussing the concept of currency.
My take was that if we all agree on value, that is the value. It does not matter what someone else thinks.
My take today in 2021? Is that the world is decentralizing. The normal powers are flexing to continue their authoritarian hold. Many are using the events of the past two years to do so.
Understanding narratives and frames helps one to cut through to the truth. So without going down that rabbit hole I will leave you with my take on crypto.
There is a larger world than just Bitcoin. Its unlimited and that world is being build on blockchain and includes crypto currency but also the so called metaverse. Which I think sells the concept short as I pointed out.
As we think of the metaverse as some gameland like Fortnight. Which it is. There is also a place where you can buy virtual real estate. Called Sandbox. Still trying to wrap my brain and meta brain around that one.
There are 4d uses that we still do not understand. But it does allow for digital worlds to be produced beyond imagination.
Here are my pro and con side having a debate:
Skeptic me-its manufactured/mined by anyone, the dollar is backed by the full faith of the U.S.A.
Cryptobullish me -Yah Im sure the left behind Afghan interpreters agree with your full faith thing.
And how about that mining?…..Who drives the economy governments or people?
When the treasury “mines” non-stop and devalues your dollar such that by the end of the year, your one dollar is now worth 6-8 cents less. Why wouldn’t people consider another currency? What do you have to lose?
And that my friends why as of right now I am bullish on digital 3.0. I am mostly interested in how it builds out. That URL service is interesting.
So thanks for hanging out and I will leave with how I was met this morning with my short walk from the coffee press to opening the drapes. I look outside and see Blackie’s pal sitting unusually close to the house, and facing right at the window where a few short feet away his bud left us all two nights ago.
